Lean In with Portland Leaders

#27
Tonkon Torp
Lean-In Lunch with 4 of Portland’s Most Powerful Women, moderated by our own Peyton Chapman and hosted by Tonkon Torp
4/10, 12:00-1:30

What does it take for a career-oriented woman to balance life and work in a man’s world? Find out how some of Portland’s most powerful women managed to “lean in,”  shatter the proverbial glass ceiling and attain positions of power in male-dominated careers. Meet Jill Nelson, stay-at-home-mom-turned-entrepreneur who recently sold a majority stake in her company, the highly celebrated Ruby Receptionists, for $38.8 Million to a private equity firm. Hear how Jennifer Fox, PhD, a geneticist and executive director of both the Oregon Translational Research and Development Institute (OTRADI) and the OTRADI Bioscience Incubator (OBI), has convincingly dispelled the ridiculous myth that “girls aren’t good at science.” Learn how Lincoln mom Sherrill Corbett continues to practice law — and forcefully — in the male-dominated securities sector, achieving partnership status with Tonkon Torp. No small feat, considering less than 20% of all law firm partners are women. Meyer Memorial Trust Chief Investment Officer Rukiayah Adams, a Stanford JD and MBA, has endured not only gender bias but racial bias in the work force. Discover how Rukiayah’s leaning in has earned her numerous high-profile investment advisory positions, including an appointment to the Oregon Investment Council by Gov. John Kitzhaber.

Includes lunch provided by Tonkon Torp.

Lincoln High School Art Studio

Enjoy an evening with Cindy Irby, visual arts teacher at LHS, for an entertaining event looking at dinnerware as cultural
artifacts. You’ll recognize some patterns and types instantly perhaps—Blue Willow, transfer ware, souvenir plates. We’ll go deeper looking at visual clues as a means to understanding cultural context and aesthetic intent. This is a fun introductory exercise to art criticism.
